The girl’s request is voiced with frightening simplicity. She not only asks for John’s head, but demands it immediately and on a platter. This cruel wording shows how quickly a person can become an instrument of evil when he surrenders his will to another’s sinful desire. Here there is not the slightest sign of mercy, hesitation, or compassion. This reminds us that a heart fallen into sin can harden to the point of demanding the blood of the righteous as a gift. That haste is also telling: evil often wants to act quickly, before conscience or prudence has time to restrain it.
