Christ rebukes the Pharisees, heals the daughter of a Canaanite woman, and performs many miracles.

1 At that time the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said, 2 “Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders, since they do not wash their hands when they eat bread?” 3 He answered and said to them, “And why do you disregard the commandments of God because of your traditions?” 4 For God said: “Honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16) and “Whoever speaks evil of his father or mother will be condemned to death” (Exodus 21:17, Leviticus 20:9). 5 But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, “The help you were going to receive from me I have offered as a gift to God,”' 6 and he may not honor his father or his mother. Because of your tradition you break God’s commandment. 7 Hypocrites, Isaiah prophesied well about you, saying. 8 “This people draw near to Me with their mouth, and with their lips they honor Me, but their heart is far from Me. 9 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines things that are invented by people.” (Isa. 29:13)». 10 And Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 A person is defiled not by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of his mouth.” 12 Then the disciples came to him and said, “Do you know that the Pharisees, when they heard that word, were offended?” 13 He answered and said, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Leave them. They are blind and leaders of the blind. When a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit together.” 15 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain that parable to us.” 16 Jesus also said, “Do you still not understand?” 17 Do you not understand that everything that enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is thrown out into the latrine? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come out of the heart, and these defile a person. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. 20 These are what defile a person, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.” 21 And Jesus went out from there and went toward the regions of Tyre and Sidon. 22 and now, a Canaanite woman, coming out from those regions, was crying out to him and saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David. my daughter is suffering terribly from a demon.” 23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came up and were pleading with Him, saying, “Send her away, because she is crying out after us.” 24 He answered and said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 And that woman came, worshiped Him, and said, “Lord, help me.” 26 But he answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it before the dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs are fed from the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith. Let it be for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed at that very moment. 29 And Jesus, leaving from there, came near the Sea of Galilee, and went up the mountain and sat there. 30 And many crowds came to Him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the mute, the disabled, and many other sick people, and they laid them at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. 31 And the crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the disabled restored to health, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they glorified the God of Israel. 32 And Jesus, calling his disciples to him, said, “I have compassion on this people, because they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And His disciples said to Him, “Where can we get so much bread in this deserted place, so that such a great crowd will be satisfied?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 And taking the seven loaves and the fish, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the people. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they filled seven baskets with the leftover pieces. 38 And those who ate were about four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After sending the crowd away, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magdala.
