And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
This verse presents Jesus’ first step in preparing for the second great feeding miracle. He asks, “How many loaves do you have?” not because he was unaware, but so that the disciples would recognize the limitation of what they had and, in faith, entrust it to him. The seven loaves and a few small fish represent the small possibilities of human means, which in God’s hand can be turned into abundance. Through this episode Jesus shows that a miracle does not require a great supply, but a willing heart, obedience, and trust in God’s power.
