The words of this and the previous verse together are a quotation from the prophecy of Isaiah 29:13. It shows that outward words and rituals are not enough to please God. If the heart is far away, then praise with the lips becomes empty. God does not accept a merely formal faith. When God’s commandments are replaced with human teachings, then worship becomes meaningless. True worship comes from within and rests on God’s true word.
