And taking the seven loaves and the fish, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the people.
In this verse Jesus takes what a person can offer: seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. First He gives thanks to God, showing that even in scarcity one should be grateful. He blesses, rather than complaining about the lack. By breaking the bread He shows readiness to share and distribute. Then He gives the bread to the disciples, and they to the people. This sequence is important: the miracle does not happen directly upon the crowd, but comes from Jesus’ hands through the disciples. In this way, Jesus makes His followers partners in the work of blessing. This verse reminds us that everything given with gratitude can be multiplied in God’s hands, and that a small gift can become a great blessing when it is entrusted to Jesus Christ.
