The Transfiguration of Christ. The healing of the demon-possessed boy and the payment of the temple tax.

1 Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John, and led them privately up a high mountain. 2 And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became white like light. 3 and now, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, speaking with Jesus. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to stay here. If you want, we will build three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, now, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and now, a voice sounded from the cloud, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” 6 And when the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces to the ground and were very afraid. 7 And Jesus came near, touched them, and said, “Get up and do not be afraid”. 8 And they lifted up their eyes and saw no one except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them and said, “Tell no one about this vision until the Son of Man rises from the dead.” 10 The disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 And Jesus answered and said to them, “It is true, Elijah must come first and restore everything.” 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist. 14 When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, knelt down, and said, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. For he often falls into the fire or into the water.” 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” 17 And Jesus answered and said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long must I be with you, how long must I bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was healed at that very moment. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why were we not able to drive it out?” 20 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” 21 But this kind of demon does not come out in any other way, except by prayer and fasting.” 22 While they were traveling in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the hands of men.” 23 And they will kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.” And they were deeply grieved. 24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came up to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?” 25 He said, “Yes, he pays.” And when he entered the house, Jesus spoke to him first and said, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tax or tribute, from their sons or from strangers?” 26 Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Jesus also said to him, “Then the sons are free.” 27 But so that we do not cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and there you will find a stater. Take it and give it to them for Me and for you.”
