And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to stay here. If you want, we will build three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
In these words we see Peter’s sincere admiration for the vision of the Transfiguration, yet also his still unfinished understanding of the mystery that is taking place. He wants to preserve that glorious moment and make it lasting, not realizing that the vision was given not for stopping, but for being strengthened on the way of the cross. The proposal to build three shelters testifies to a desire to secure heavenly glory in an earthly manner, where Moses and Elijah are still viewed alongside Christ, rather than under His light. This episode shows that a person may have lofty spiritual experiences, yet their true meaning is opened only when he is ready to continue on the path of God’s will—not to keep the glorious moment, but to live in obedience.
