Matthew 17:23

And they will kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.” And they were deeply grieved.

While traveling through Galilee, Jesus tells the disciples for the second time about his coming sufferings, death, and resurrection, emphasizing that he will be handed over into the hands of men willingly, will be killed, yet on the third day will rise again. Here he speaks openly, without parables, showing that his path to the cross is planned beforehand by the will of God. But the disciples, not understanding the full meaning of the promise of the resurrection, focus only on the pain and loss that are to come, and they are filled with sorrow. Their response is humanly natural, but it also shows that they still have not grasped the depth of Christ’s saving work—suffering as the way to glory and life.
