Matthew 17:5

While he was still speaking, now, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and now, a voice sounded from the cloud, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”

While Peter was still speaking, trying to secure the glory of the vision in an earthly way by means of shelters, God the Father Himself intervenes with a bright cloud and a voice, directing attention not to human initiative but to the identity of Christ. The cloud symbolizes the divine presence, recalling the revelation described in Exodus 24:15–18, where the glory of God covered the mountain. The voice from the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” gives clear and final testimony about Jesus’ messianic and divine calling. The command, “Listen to him,” shows that Christ surpasses both Moses and Elijah, and that the Law and the Prophets find their fulfillment and final authority in his word. This episode is a call to the disciples and to all believers to anchor the direction of faith and life not in the glory that came at the moment of the vision, but in the word of Christ, who was the perfect revelation of God.
