Christ’s fast. Peter and Andrew. James and John.

1 After that, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he felt hunger. 3 And the tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’ (Deut. 8:3).” 5 Then the devil took him into the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple. 6 And he said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, for it is written: ‘He has commanded His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up on their hands, so that You will never strike Your foot against a stone’ (Ps. 90(91):11a, 12).” 7 Jesus said to him again, “It is written: ‘You will not test the Lord your God’ (Deut. 6:16).” 8 Again the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you fall down before me and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan, for it is written: ‘You will worship the Lord your God, and you will serve only Him’ (Deut. 6:13).” 11 Then the devil left him, and now, angels came near and were ministering to Jesus. 12 When Jesus heard that John had been handed over, he withdrew and went to Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying. 15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee inhabited by Gentiles.” 16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and a light dawned for those who were living in the shadow-covered land of death” (Isa. 8:23b–9:1). 17 From then on Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.” 18 As Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 Jesus said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 And they immediately left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there, Jesus saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, who were in the boat with Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 They too immediately left the boat and their father and went after Him. 23 And Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and healing every disease and every pain among the people. 24 His fame spread throughout all Syria. They brought to Jesus all the sick who were suffering from various pains and torments: the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed. And he was healing them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from the other side of the Jordan.
