Matthew 4:7

Jesus said to him again, “It is written: ‘You will not test the Lord your God’ (Deut. 6:16).”

Jesus answers Satan with the words of Deuteronomy 6:16, showing that faith never means testing God or forcing Him to act on personal terms. He rejects the temptation to prove His divine power or to check God’s faithfulness. To test God means to doubt His care and to try to provoke Him to intervene, not with trust but with arrogance. Jesus, unlike the people of Israel who tested the Lord at Massah and Meribah (Exodus 17:2–7), fully trusts the Father without demanding signs or proofs. This answer reveals the essence of faith: to trust God’s word and submit to His timing, without trying to control the way He acts.
