The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and a light dawned for those who were living in the shadow-covered land of death” (Isa. 8:23b–9:1).
This prophetic word from Isaiah describes the spiritual reality in which Israel was living: in darkness, ignorance, and sin. The lands of Zebulun and Naphtali, the northern regions of Galilee, sometimes called “Galilee of the Gentiles,” symbolized people who had turned away from God and were in spiritual darkness. Yet precisely there, according to the prophecy, a great light was to dawn: the Messiah, Jesus Christ. His coming brought light to the people sitting in darkness, bringing hope, truth, and salvation. In this way, the prophecy was fulfilled through Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, emphasizing that God’s light is not limited to one nation, but spreads to all who receive him.
