The Pharisees ask for a sign. Christ’s answer. He foretells his death in advance.

1 And the Pharisees and the Sadducees came up to Jesus and, testing him, wanted him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said to them, “In the evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, because the sky has turned red’.” 3 And in the morning you say, ‘Today there will be bad weather, because the sky has grown dark and red.’ Hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky, but can you not recognize the signs of the times?” 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And he left them and went away. 5 When his disciples went to the other side of the lake, they forgot to take bread with them. 6 And Jesus said to them, “See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees”. 7 They were reasoning among themselves and saying, “We did not take bread.” 8 And Jesus, understanding this, said, “You of little faith, why are you thinking among yourselves that you did not take bread?” 9 Do you still not understand, or do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you picked up? 10 nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you picked up? 11 How do you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread: be careful of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not saying to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 13 And Jesus went to the regions of Caesarea Philippi, and he asked his disciples and said, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They said, “Some say that he is John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets”. 15 He said to them, “But you, what do you say about Me, who am I?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” 18 I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of hell will not be able to overcome it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then Jesus commanded his disciples to tell no one that he himself is the Christ. 21 From then on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and on the third day rise again. 22 Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord. may such a thing never happen to you.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to Me, because you are thinking not as God wills, but as people do.” 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me”. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what benefit does a man have if he gains the whole world, but loses his life? Or what can a man give in exchange for saving his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father, with his angels, and then he will repay each person according to his deeds. 28 Truly I tell you, some of those standing here will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
