And Jesus went to the regions of Caesarea Philippi, and he asked his disciples and said, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
Jesus, having come to the region of Caesarea Philippi—a district known for pagan worship—asks the disciples a foundational question, in order to know how the common people understand His person. The question has an educational and spiritual purpose: Jesus begins to lead His disciples toward the confession of true faith. By the expression “Son of Man” He uses His beloved self-designation, with a messianic and prophetic background, directing attention to His divine calling. At the same time, the question reveals the various opinions among the people and the faith that is maturing within the disciples.
