Christ’s teaching about divorce and wealth.

1 When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and came to the borders of Judea, on the other side of the Jordan. 2 And many crowds were following Him, and He healed them there. 3 And the Pharisees came to him, and testing him they asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife without any reason?” 4 He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that the Creator from the beginning made them male and female and said, 5 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh,” 6 so that they are no longer two, but one body. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 7 They said to him, “Then why did Moses command us to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I tell you that every man who divorces his wife without the reason of sexual immorality, and marries another woman, commits adultery. And the man who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery” (Matt. 5:31). 10 The disciples said to Him, “If the husband’s relationship with his wife is like that, then it is better not to marry.” 11 Jesus also said to them, “Not everyone is able to accept that, but only those to whom it has been given.” 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb. And there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by people. And there are also eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to walk this way, walk it.” 13 Then children were brought to Him, so that He might lay His hand on them and pray. But the disciples were rebuking them. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the children be, and do not hinder them from coming to Me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away from there. 16 and now, someone came up to Jesus and said, “Good Teacher, what good deed must I do in order to have eternal life?” 17 He said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one, God. But if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He also said to Him, “Which commandments?” And Jesus said, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself” (Exodus 20:13-16, 12. Deuteronomy 5:17-20, 16. Lev. 19:18). 20 The young man said to him, “I have kept all these from my childhood. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” 22 When the young man heard this word, he went away sorrowful, because he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you that a rich man will enter the kingdom of heaven with difficulty. 24 But again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 25 When his disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “For people this is impossible, but for God everything is possible.” 27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Look, we left everything and followed You. So what will there be for us?” 28 Jesus also said to them, “Truly I tell you that you who have followed Me, when the Son of Man at the second coming sits on the throne of His glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.” 29 Everyone who, for My name’s sake, leaves house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. 30 Many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
