and now, someone came up to Jesus and said, “Good Teacher, what good deed must I do in order to have eternal life?”
The way the man who questioned Jesus phrases his question shows that he thinks salvation can be obtained by works, that is, by taking some action or possessing some merit. This approach was characteristic of the religious thinking of the time, where the emphasis was placed more on keeping the law, without giving much importance to the posture of the heart. But Jesus will soon correct his understanding, revealing that true goodness comes only from God, and that entering eternal life requires humility of heart, acceptance of divine truth, and self-sacrificing devotion, rather than mere charity without inner transformation.
