Everyone who, for My name’s sake, leaves house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life.
In this verse Jesus expands the previous promise, including not only the apostles, but everyone who, for the Lord’s love, is ready to sacrifice his earthly ties. This “leaving” refers to a conscious and loving yielding, not a separation by compulsion. Both family and possessions can become an obstacle on the path to the kingdom of God when they take the primary place in the heart. But whoever yields them for the name of Jesus will not only receive a hundredfold spiritual recompense—in the form of brothers, homes, and joy (see also Mark 10:29–30)—but will also inherit eternal life. This word emphasizes that God is just: He never forgets sacrifices that are made with faith and love.
