The Arrival of the Magi in Jerusalem. Herod. Christ in Egypt.

1 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, now, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 and said, “Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.” 3 And when King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And he gathered together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, and inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They answered him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet.” 6 “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judea, are by no means the least among the cities of Judea, for from you a ruler will come out for me, who will shepherd my people, Israel” (Mic. 5:1 (5:2)).” 7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men and inquired of them exactly what time the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and find out carefully about the child, and when you find him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they departed. and now, the star which they had seen in the east went before them, until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and falling down, they worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasure chests, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country by another way. 13 When they had departed from there, now, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Arise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt. Remain there until I tell you, for Herod is seeking the Child to destroy Him.” 14 Joseph arose, took the Child and His mother by night, and departed into Egypt. 15 He remained there until the death of Herod, that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: “Out of Egypt I have called My Son” (Hos. 11:1). 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry. He sent men and slew all the male children in Bethlehem and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 18 A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning. Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 19 When Herod died, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 and said, “Rise, take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 And he arose, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. and being warned in a dream, he departed into the regions of Galilee. 23 And He came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, that He will be called a Nazarene.
