Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
This verse shows that the account of the slaughter of the infants had been foretold beforehand by the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 31:15). The Evangelist explains that this grievous event, which arose from human wickedness, is also within the bounds of God’s providence, becoming the fulfillment of prophecy. This underscores the depth of divine wisdom: God never becomes the cause of evil, yet by His infinite power He can encompass it within the accomplishment of the divine purposes. Thus, even sinful human actions cannot thwart His word, which is fulfilled in its own time.
