Psalm 9:4

For You defended my right and my cause, and You sat on the throne like a righteous Judge.

David presents God as the righteous Judge seated on the throne. He has defended David’s right and his case, that is, He has examined his matter and confirmed the truth. The throne is an image of authority, stability, and a final decision. God’s judgment is not hasty or biased. He knows all the facts and the secrets of hearts. For a person who has been slandered or is suffering from injustice, this word gives great comfort. Human courts can err, be influenced, or fail to see the whole reality, but the Lord does not make mistakes. At the same time, this verse humbles us, because the same Judge also examines us. We cannot demand justice from others while we ourselves refuse repentance. The believer can entrust his cause to God, rejecting both despair and personal revenge.
