When my enemies turned back, they stumbled and perished before Your presence.
David attributes the defeat of his enemies to God’s presence, not to his own strength. They turn back, stumble, and perish, because they cannot endure before the righteous Judge. The phrase “before Your presence” reminds us that God’s appearing changes the true balance of power. People may seem terrifying, yet before the Lord’s authority they are limited. This verse calls the believer not to become proud in times of victory. If God delivers from danger, the glory belongs to Him. At the same time, these words should not be used to justify personal revenge. David is describing God’s judgment, not his own cruelty. The believer may pray that evil plans will fail and that truth will prevail. Yet the manner and the time of judgment must be entrusted to the Lord, who acts with perfect righteousness.
