In You I will rejoice and exult. I will sing a psalm to Your name, O Most High.
The source of David’s joy is God Himself. He does not say only that he rejoices in the Lord’s gifts or in the defeat of enemies, but, “in You.” This is the deepest foundation of spiritual joy. Circumstances change, but the Most High remains the same. Calling God “the Most High” reminds us that He is above all human authorities and dangers. Singing a psalm turns joy into conscious worship. A believer’s feelings may waver, yet he can choose to turn his attention to the Lord’s nature. To rejoice in God means to value His presence, love, righteousness, and faithfulness more highly than temporary successes. This joy does not ignore pain, but it does not allow pain to become the only reality of life. A heart that sings the Lord’s name receives new strength.
