For the poor will not be forgotten forever, and the hope of the afflicted will not perish forever.
This verse is a promise of hope for people forgotten by society. The poor and the afflicted may be overlooked by people, but God does not forget them. Their hope may be tested for a long time, but in the end it will not be lost. This does not mean that every material hardship will disappear immediately. The promise is deeper: the Lord sees their condition, hears their cry, and in His time will establish justice. The believer must place his hope not in people’s changeable attention, but in God’s unchanging faithfulness. At the same time, this word obligates the church. If God does not forget the poor, His people also must not forget. Practical faith is expressed through mercy, justice, and real help toward the one in need. The poor person’s hope is in God, yet the believer can become an instrument of that care.
