Psalm 9:17

The wicked will turn back to Sheol, and all the nations that forget God.

Forgetting God is not merely a mental inattentiveness. It is the choice to arrange life independently of His authority and truth. The end of that path is described as hell, an image of ruin and judgment. The mention of the nations shows that all peoples and societies are also responsible for their moral course. No culture can be built securely while continually rejecting God’s righteousness. At the same time, this word must not feed national or religious pride. Every person needs to remember the Lord and repent. For the believer, “remembering God” means living with an awareness of His presence, keeping His word, and submitting decisions to His will. Forgetfulness begins with small neglects and can turn into the direction of an entire life. Therefore the reminders of Holy Scripture are means of grace that bring us back to life.
