The Lord made Himself known, He carried out judgment. The wicked was caught in the works of his own hands.
God’s judgment reveals His character. The Lord “made Himself known” not in the sense that He was previously unknown, but because by His deed He made His righteousness visible. The wicked is caught in the work of his own hands. This is the moral order of retribution: a person finally meets the fruit of the path he has chosen. The verse teaches the believer to see in history not only random events, but also signs of God’s righteous rule. Yet one must be careful not to declare every misfortune immediately as punishment for a specific sin. A person does not always have the full explanation of the Lord’s work. Here the matter is a clearly revealed judgment. The practical application is simple: people’s deeds are not separated from them. They shape their path and the consequences. Therefore one must, with repentance, abandon evil and, by the grace of Christ, walk in good works.
