The Gentiles fell into the pit that they themselves had dug, and their foot was caught in the net that they themselves had hidden.
The pit and the net are images of deceitful schemes. The pagans prepared traps in order to harm others, but they themselves fell into them. This verse shows the self-destructive nature of sin. Evil often turns against the one who commits it. The deceiver loses trust, the tyrant lives in fear, and an unjust system finally collapses under its own contradictions. This does not mean that every sin immediately receives a visible repayment. Yet under God’s righteous rule, evil does not have the final victory. From this word the believer learns not to use the same unjust means against the enemy. We have no need to dig secret pits, because the Lord sees and judges. True security is not in cunning, but in the way of righteousness. A trap prepared for another can in the end become the very cause of the maker’s destruction.
