Sheep and oxen were part of a person’s daily labor, food, and livelihood, while the beasts of the field represented the world that lies beyond his immediate control. All this diversity is God’s creation and a gift entrusted to human care. The verse teaches the believer a responsible attitude toward the animal world. Authority given by God is never a right to cruelty. It must reflect the Creator’s care. A person may make use of created goods, yet cannot regard himself as their absolute owner. Everything belongs to the Lord. This word also reminds us of the dignity of work: farming, animal husbandry, and daily care can be ways of serving God when they are done with righteousness and gratitude.
