Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous, for You, O righteous God, are the One who examines hearts and minds.
David’s request is directed not only against a personal enemy, but in general toward the end of evil. He desires that the course of lawlessness should cease and that the righteous should be established. “You who examine hearts and minds” in poetic language presents a person’s inner thoughts, feelings, and motives. God does not judge only outward deeds. He sees what is hidden from human eyes. This is a comfort for the slandered person, because the Lord knows the truth. At the same time, this is a serious warning for all of us, since outward piety cannot deceive Him. The request “Establish the righteous” shows that even a righteous person needs God’s protection. He does not stand by his own strength. It is the Lord who establishes him in pressure and trial. Thus, the believer’s prayer is not only a request to be delivered from hardship, but also a request that the Lord put an end to the working of evil and establish him on the path of truth, righteousness, and holiness.
