Lord, my God, if I have done this, if there is injustice in my hands,
Before asking for God’s judgment, David is ready for self-examination. He does not assume that his righteousness is automatically confirmed simply because he is suffering. The words “If I have done this” show that he is prepared to lay his conduct open before the Lord. This is an important example in every time of conflict. A person easily sees the other’s sin and ignores his own responsibility. David asks for a righteous judgment, and therefore he accepts that this same judgment must also examine him. The phrase “iniquity in my hands” refers to sin that has been committed. The believer likewise must ask whether his words, attitude, or steps have contributed to the problem. Self-examination does not mean accepting a false accusation. It means, with humility, allowing God’s light to reveal the truth. A clean conscience is born not from self-justification, but from sincere repentance and grace.
