So that they do not tear my soul apart like a lion and rip it to pieces, with no one to deliver.
The persecutor is presented with the image of a lion. A lion is a swift, strong, and merciless predator, and its victim can hardly escape by its own strength. With this image David expresses his defenseless condition and the seriousness of the danger. The phrase “when there is no deliverer” describes complete loneliness from a human point of view. Yet at that very moment he turns to the Lord as the only true Deliverer. The poetic image can also describe the destructive power of slander. A false word sometimes tears apart a person’s reputation and peace as cruelly as a beast tears the body. A believer may face situations where no one understands or defends him. This verse teaches bringing that loneliness before God. The Lord can deliver not only from visible violence, but also from soul-destroying fear. When human help is not in sight, divine help does not cease to be real.
