Lord, my God, I take refuge in You. Save me from all who persecute me, and deliver me.
In danger David immediately declares the direction of his trust: “In You I take refuge.” He does not deny the real threat of the persecutors, yet above them he sees the authority of God. The expression “my God” shows personal covenant trust. David not only knows that God exists, but knows Him as his refuge. He asks for deliverance from all persecutors, because by human strength he cannot secure complete freedom. The practical meaning of the verse is clear: in times of danger the first response must be to turn to the Lord. This does not exclude wise steps or lawful defense, but these do not become the final hope. The believer can bring the specific threats of his life before God and ask for His intervention. Taking refuge is not only a feeling. It is a decision: to entrust safety to the Lord and not choose sinful means in order to protect oneself.
