I will give thanks to the Lord for His righteousness, and I will sing a psalm to the name of the Most High Lord.
The psalm ends with gratitude focused not on the enemy, but on God. David gives thanks for the Lord’s righteousness. He may still not see the full carrying out of judgment, yet he trusts God’s character. Gratitude here is an act of faith. David does not base his peace on the fact that he controls the outcome, but on the fact that the Lord is the righteous Judge. The name “Most High” reminds us that God is above all opponents and earthly authorities. To sing a psalm to Him means to acknowledge publicly His goodness and righteousness. The believer’s prayer, too, should finally lead to worship. We not only ask for help, but also learn to know God in the trial. When we entrust judgment to Him, the heart is freed from the burden of revenge and is able to give thanks. The Lord’s righteousness is the firm foundation of our hope, peace, and song.
