His evil will return on his own head, and his lawlessness will come down on his crown.
Here the image from the previous verse continues and confirms the principle of recompense. A person’s evil and violence in the end return upon him. This does not always happen immediately or before people’s eyes, yet under God’s righteous rule sin does not remain without consequence. Injustice harms not only the victim, but also the soul of the one who commits injustice. It hardens the heart, destroys relationships, and sets a person before God’s judgment. David is comforted by this truth, because he is not obligated to take revenge personally. The believer can hand the burden of injustice over to the Lord, being confident that He knows the truth. At the same time, the verse warns about one’s own conduct. What we sow, that we will also reap (Galatians 6:7). Therefore we must renounce evil, repent, and by the grace of Christ choose the path of righteousness, mercy, and peace.
