My shield is from God, who saves the upright in heart.
David presents God as the source of his protection. He does not say only that God is a shield, but that all his security comes from Him. And “the upright in heart” are not perfect people, but those whose heart is sincerely directed toward God. In their life there may be weaknesses and falls, yet they do not live in conscious hypocrisy and do not love sin. The Lord saves such people not because of their faultlessness, but because of His grace and faithfulness. The image of the shield does not mean that the believer will never be subjected to blows or trials; David himself was already being persecuted. It shows that no blow can finally destroy him or remove him from God’s keeping. This verse also reveals where a person seeks his security. A person may rely on authority, influential people, or his own abilities, but these can give only temporary protection. But true safety comes from the Lord, and the person with an upright heart finds his steadfast refuge in God’s truth and faithfulness.
