For there is no truth in their mouth. their inward part is evil. Their throat is an open grave. with their tongue they practice deceit.
David describes the inner source and destructive effect of evil speech. The problem is not only wrong expressions. The phrase “Their inward part is wickedness” shows a corrupted heart, from which lying and flattery flow. The image of an “open grave” portrays speech that spreads death and corruption. A deceitful tongue twists the truth in order to deceive, mislead, or harm. The New Testament mentions this statement when describing the universal condition of human sinfulness (Romans 3:13). Therefore, the verse is not only about David’s enemies. It calls every person to examine his own speech. Our words can heal or wound, build up or tear down. In the Christian life, the holiness of the tongue is of great importance. The believer must renounce false compliments, slander, and misleading speech, and speak the truth in love.
