Hear the voice of my cry, O my King and my God, for to You I pray.
David calls the Lord “my King and my God.” These names unite God’s sovereignty and personal closeness. He is the King of all, yet David also knows Him as his God. For this reason the prayer is directed to Him alone. “The voice of my cry” shows the urgency of the request. David does not appeal to an undefined force or to a human patron, but to the King who has full authority to hear and to act. The believer’s prayer also grows stronger when he remembers to whom he is speaking. God is not only a compassionate Father, but also the sovereign Lord. His power is sufficient to help, and His wisdom is perfect to give the right answer. This verse also examines the direction of our trust. When we are in trouble, to whom do we turn first? David teaches that human means may have their place, but the first and chief addressee of prayer is the Lord.
