Psalm 5:1

Give ear to my words, O Lord. pay attention to my cry.

David presents to God not only the words he speaks, but also the groaning that lies deep within the heart. At times the pain is so great that a person cannot express it clearly in words. Yet the Lord also hears what the lips cannot fully say. The request, “Pay attention to my cry,” shows the prayer’s confidence that God knows his inner condition and understands the true need. This does not mean that the Lord needs information, but expresses a person’s desire to open himself fully before Him. The believer can draw near to God without formality, telling his fears, confusion, and spiritual pain. The value of prayer is not only in beautiful words, but in a sincere heart. Even when our words are imperfect, the Holy Spirit helps our weakness and intercedes for us (Romans 8:26).
