Psalm 5:12

For You will bless the righteous, O Lord. with Your favor You will surround him like a shield.

The psalm ends with confidence that the Lord blesses and preserves the righteous. The image “You will surround him like a shield” shows complete protection. God’s favor is not merely a distant approval, but living care that surrounds the one who trusts in Him. The righteous here is not a flawless person. He is the person who has been reconciled with God by grace and desires to walk in His ways. Blessing also does not mean constant material success or a life free from trials. David speaks of protection while he is in danger. God’s blessing can be expressed in peace, endurance, guidance, and final salvation. In Christ, the believer is accepted before God and receives His fatherly care. Therefore this word nourishes not careless self-confidence, but grateful faith. The Lord’s favor is a more steadfast protection than the strongest human fortress.
