Many say, “Who will show us good?” Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O Lord.
People often ask, “Who will show us good?” This question can express despair or a search only for outward well-being. Many equate good with material success, security, and pleasant circumstances. David answers with a deeper request: “Lift up the light of Your face upon us.” The light of God’s face is an image of His favor, presence, and blessing. This word recalls the priestly blessing, where it is asked that the Lord make His face shine upon the people (Numbers 6:24–26). For David, the greatest good is not merely being delivered from danger, but the presence of God. The believer likewise must learn to seek the Giver more than His gifts. When the light of the Lord’s face is upon us, even in hardship we can have direction, peace, and hope.
