Psalm 4:3

Know that the Lord has set apart the godly for Himself. The Lord will hear when I call to Him.

David declares with confidence that the Lord knows the godly person and sets him apart for Himself. The phrase “has set apart” does not mean human pride or contempt toward others. It speaks of God’s gracious choosing and special care. The godly person is not a perfect person, but one who belongs to the Lord by faith and desires to live according to His will. David’s enemies thought they could oppress him without punishment, but he reminds them that God’s servant is not alone. The Lord hears his prayer. This confidence is not based on the one praying’s merits, but on God’s covenant faithfulness. A believer may at times feel overlooked or rejected by people, but God knows those who belong to Him. His ear is open to their cry. This truth should produce in us not self-confidence, but holiness and gratitude.
