Psalm 3:5

I lay down and slept, and I woke up, because the Lord is keeping me.

Sleeping in danger is a sign of great trust. David was surrounded by enemies, yet he was able to lie down and sleep, because he entrusted his protection to the Lord. Sleep here is not only bodily rest, but a practical expression of faith. When a person is asleep, he cannot control his surroundings or defend himself. Therefore, every peaceful awakening is a gift of God’s protection. David does not say that he awoke because of his own vigilance or strength, but confesses: “The Lord keeps me.” This verse teaches that the struggle against anxiety is not overcome by thoughts alone. The soul must hand its burden over to God and accept its own limitation. The believer can rest not because all problems have been solved, but because the Lord is awake. Every new day is a testimony of His faithfulness and a new opportunity to continue serving.
