Many were saying about me, “For this one there is no salvation in his God.”
David’s enemies were not satisfied with only waging war against him. They tried to strike at his faith, insisting that God would no longer save him. Such words were especially heavy, because David’s greatest hope was the Lord. The enemies’ aim was to persuade him that his sins and his present misery proved God’s rejection. Yet hardship is not always a sign of being abandoned. God’s people can pass through severe trials while remaining under His care. The believer too may hear inner or outer accusing voices that say, “There is no longer any hope for you.” At that moment one must distinguish God’s rebuke from the enemy’s despairing condemnation. The Lord does not drive away the one who repents. This verse teaches that confidence in salvation should not be based on people’s opinion or on existing circumstances, but should be based on the promises God has given.
