You will shepherd them with an iron rod and shatter them like a potter’s vessel.”
The iron rod is an image of firm, unshakable, and invincible authority. It shows that the kingdom of God’s Anointed cannot be destroyed or defeated by any opposing power. The phrase “You will shatter them like a potter’s vessel” is a poetic image describing the weakness and final downfall of powers that rebel against God. No matter how strong and fearsome human kingdoms may seem, before God’s authority they are fragile, like a clay vessel. This word does not teach people to treat others with violence or cruelty. The One acting in the verse is God’s Anointed, and the image refers to His righteous judgment and the final defeat of evil. Christ’s authority is not arbitrary or merciless authority, because He judges with perfect truth and righteousness. In the New Testament this image is connected with the triumphant kingdom of Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:15). The verse warns that stubborn opposition to God’s authority cannot continue forever. At the same time, it comforts believers, assuring them that injustice, violence, and evil will not have the final word, because God’s righteous kingdom will ultimately prevail.
