Ask of Me, and I will give you the nations as an inheritance, and the ends of the earth as Your possession.
The Father promises His Anointed not authority over only one people, but dominion over all nations. For a historical king, this word expressed a promise of broad rule. In Christ it receives a worldwide fulfillment. His kingdom is not limited by any nation, language, or land. After the resurrection, Jesus sent His disciples to all nations, showing that the Gospel is intended for the whole world (Matthew 28:18–20). The expression “the ends of the earth” emphasizes the universal nature of Christ’s authority. For the believer, this verse is also a call to prayer and mission. The Church should desire that all peoples come to know the Savior and submit to His gracious authority. Christ’s inheritance is not a people conquered by violence, but a multitude of people called by the Gospel and saved by faith. Therefore no people are outside God’s saving invitation.
