“Let us tear off their bonds and throw off their yoke from us.”
Rebellious peoples portray God’s authority as chains and a yoke. The sinful heart often perceives the Lord’s commandments as a burden that restricts freedom, because it wants to decide good and evil on its own. In reality, God’s law does not enslave a person, but protects him from the destructive power of sin. The one who wants to become independent from the Lord does not find true freedom, but becomes a captive of his own desires. Christ also speaks about His yoke, yet He calls it sweet and light, because His authority is full of grace, truth, and rest (Matthew 11:29–30). This verse calls us to examine our attitude toward the will of God. When His commandment seems heavy, the problem is not in the goodness of the commandment, but in the resistance of our heart. Spiritual maturity begins where a person accepts the Lord’s authority as the path of life and true freedom.
