Kiss the Son, so that He does not become angry and you do not perish on the way, for His anger can be kindled quickly. Blessed are all those who trust in Him.
The phrase “Kiss the Son” is an image of obedience, honor, and faithfulness. In the ancient world, kissing the king could mean acknowledging his authority and expressing submission. Here the rebellious kings and peoples are called to stop their resistance, to accept the rule of God’s Anointed, and to be reconciled with Him. Thus, in the Psalm’s original historical sense, the words refer to a call to honor the king established by God and to submit to his authority. Yet in the Psalm’s messianic sense, this call finds its full fulfillment in Jesus Christ. To honor the Son means to receive Christ by faith as Lord and Savior, to trust His authority, and to obey His word. The verse at the same time contains both a warning and good news. The Son’s wrath is not His arbitrary anger, but the righteous judgment against evil and disobedience. Yet those who take refuge in Him find not destruction, but shelter and mercy. The Psalm begins with the turmoil of the nations, but ends with the promise of personal blessedness. The phrase “so that you do not perish on the way” reminds us that a path that turns away from God finally leads to ruin. But true safety is not in human strength or self-justification, but in trusting the Son of God. Whoever takes refuge in Him finds protection, mercy, and true blessedness.
