Now therefore, O kings, be wise. be instructed, O judges of the earth.
After the declaration of judgment, a merciful invitation is heard. God does not immediately destroy the rebels, but calls them to wisdom and instruction. Kings and judges are mentioned specifically because those who have authority are responsible not only for themselves, but also for the people they lead. True wisdom begins when a person recognizes his limits and accepts God’s sovereignty. No earthly office frees anyone from the Lord’s judgment. On the contrary, great authority brings great responsibility. Yet this invitation also applies to every person. Each one, in the decisions of his life, acts as one who makes choices and must be instructed by God’s word. The verse shows that the Lord’s warning is an expression of mercy. He speaks about judgment so that the sinner may repent. A wise person does not despise that call, but with humility receives God’s truth.
