God’s commandments are “upright” because they lead on the right path and do not mislead a person. They not only set boundaries, but also make the heart rejoice. A sinful heart sometimes considers God’s will a burden, yet a commandment received by faith frees from deception and leads on the path of peace. The phrase “enlightens the eyes” refers to spiritual sight, the ability to distinguish what is right from what is wrong. When a person’s judgment is darkened by personal desires or external influences, God’s word gives light and straightens his path. For the believer, this is a call to view the commandments not only as an obligation, but also as grace. The Lord shows how to live, because He knows the true way of life. The light of Holy Scripture sometimes reveals sin in a painful way, yet that revelation can become the beginning of healing and renewal. True joy and true holiness are not opposed to each other.
