Day passes on speech to day, and night makes knowledge known to night.
The testimony of creation is continual. Each new day, after the one before it, again proclaims the Creator’s faithfulness, and each night, by its silence, passes on knowledge. With this image David shows that God’s creative witness is not accidental or rare. It is daily. The light of day and the star-filled sky of night, in different ways, point to the same Creator. The believer can learn to see God’s faithfulness in ordinary everyday events. Each new sunrise of the sun can seem so common to us that we no longer marvel. The Psalm restores that wonder. At the same time, this “knowledge” does not replace the special revelation of Holy Scripture. Nature bears witness about God, but it does not fully tell of Christ’s cross and resurrection. Therefore the testimony of creation urges us to know the Creator more deeply through the Word and to respond to Him with worship.
