They are more desirable than gold, even than a great amount of refined gold. they are sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
David compares the worth of God’s word with two desirable goods: gold and honey. Gold represents great material value, and honey represents pleasure and sweetness. Yet the Lord’s word is more valuable than both, because it gives what neither wealth nor sensual pleasure can give: truth, wisdom, and guidance to live according to God’s will. The verse does not condemn material goods and the pleasant gifts of life, but shows their proper place. The believer must ask what he truly desires most. We may say with our words that we love Holy Scripture, but our time and attention reveal our true appetite. The sweetness of God’s word becomes clearer for those who not only read it, but also obey it. From that obedience a deep and lasting joy is born.
